Social Networking: Its importance and as an Attractive Online Business

The significance of social networking in our daily lives can not be downplayed. Many people relied on social networking to connect with their friends and families. The technology brings people together, builds new relationship and re-establishes a once lost relationship. Sometimes, it becomes the only link that people have for individuals that are geographically away from them.

Social networking takes interaction, communication and dating in different form. As technology evolves, the people go along with it. Now, it is easy to get updates about what your friends are doing, communicate with your friends in real-time and even get information about what’s going on within your network.

The business trend nowadays swayed business owners and marketers to use the media to establish online presence, generate new leads, help find potential business partners, extend their marketing reach and among other business functions.

The most popular and profitable among the bunch is Facebook. Statistics (Facebook) shows that there are over 750 million active users.  FB has been raking revenues mostly from advertising. Mashable reported a whopping $2 billion revenue in 2010.

Other social networking giants like Myspace, Twitter and LinkedIn are enjoying massive revenues too. With all the news of success from these giant names plus testimonies of many niche social networking sites, it is not surprising that many business-minded individuals would take their chances in creating their own with the hope of making it big. If you are among them, the next question is: How to start a social networking site like Facebook? There is not one single and easy answer for that. Like any other businesses, creating a social networking site like that comes with a risk. But if everything is planned well and the tactics are executed carefully and accurately, I think there is no reason not to succeed in your endeavor.

Among the things that an entrepreneur should consider when starting out his own social networking include the web hosting service or social networking script provider, initial investment, financial source, market and business objective. Coming up with a detailed plan, like most businesses, helps an entrepreneur in the decisions and actions to take.

Social Media Footprint

Companies, whether an SMB or a large corporation, entrepreneurs and marketers are finding ways on how to reach their target audience. With the undeniable popularity and growing importance of social media, not only in the personal level but in the business aspect, companies are seeking ways in integrating Web 2.0 in their business operation.

I never put attention to this matter until I had a writing project about social networking. I never realized that the emergence of social networking has indeed revolutionize many things, from the way we connect with our friends and reach people from other parts of the globe to the way we do business. For me, it was just simply checking updates from my network and expressing myself and sharing quotes, photos and videos.

Web 2.0, as far as my understanding goes (I am not that techy though. And I don't declare myself as a social media expert, but I am an advocate of it.), refers to the internet applications that makes sharing, collaboration and communication easier. This includes social networking, video sharing, wikis and blogs, mashups and among others.

Why do we need to create a social media footprint? In the business perspective, this is making our information available in an environment where our target audience are. Imagine how many millions of people are visiting the social media giants that we come to adore so much. Facebook alone has 750 million users with almost half of that population visit the site in any given day.

Why is There a Need for Online Presence

I respect people who desired anonymity in the cyber world. I may not agree with their reasons, but I understand their fears and hesitation. Leaving no media footprint is the way to go for people who wish to remain private in their lives – no social networking profile, no blogs or whatsoever. It sounds so sad.

Working adults, especially professionals, need to be visible in the World Wide Web. Why? Social media has changed the recruitment landscape. Many companies even big corporation have LinkedIn accounts, and they are actively seeking for potential candidates or talents. Instead of companies waiting for individuals to respond to their ads and browsing through the overwhelming number of CVs, they search for people that meet their requirements. This strategy let companies avoid insincere applicants or the time-wasters.

In this digital era, online presence isn’t just a trendy thing to do, but it is essential especially to people who owns a business or who markets their services or products. One of the quickest, simplest and less expensive ways to create an online presence is to set an account in social networking giants like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Myspace and Google+

I strongly believe in the power of social media. Hence, as a self-declared advocate of Web 2.0, I leverage social media for business  and use it for self-expression. Well, I consider myself a novice. There are many things to learn. It actually gets overwhelming at times.

Professionals using social media have the competitive advantage over their counterparts who are not active in the internet.  This let companies find them, see their track records and offer them jobs or business opportunities. It’s the same for business that incorporate social media marketing to reach their target audience. Professionals too need to use technology in order to be searchable and market themselves.
